The leash rules in Canton Zurich are genuinely layered — nature reserve rules, municipal bylaws, and the seasonal woodland-edge rule are three separate regulatory systems that don't cancel each other out.
The Confirmed Dog Swimming Spots In and Around Zurich
1. Katzensee (Zurich-Affoltern)
Leash required: Yes, throughout the entire nature reserve
Swimming: Permitted at the designated swimming area

Katzensee sits in the north of Zurich and is a protected nature reserve. Your dog cannot run free here — the leash requirement applies across the entire area, including at the water. There is a designated swimming spot where both you and your dog can get in the water. This is not a dedicated dog beach; it's a general bathing area where dogs on a leash are permitted.
2. Türlersee (Nature Reserve, Aeugst am Albis)
Leash required: Yes
Swimming: Permitted

A little outside the city, in the district of Affoltern, lies Türlersee. Leash requirement applies throughout the protected area here too — but swimming is explicitly permitted. The lake is quiet, less crowded than Lake Zurich, and makes for a relaxed summer afternoon.
3. Thurauen (Nature Reserve, Northern Canton Border)
Leash required: Yes — from 1 April to 31 July (inclusive) in the recreation zone
Off-leash from: 1 August — from that date, dogs may run free in the designated recreation zone
Swimming: Permitted (in the recreation zone)

Thurauen sits near the northern canton border, close to the boundary with Canton Schaffhausen. The designated recreation zone allows grilling, swimming, and — from 1 August — dogs off-leash. Until the end of July, the leash requirement applies here. Important: staying on marked paths is required, and landing by boat is prohibited.

What Changes on 1 August?
On 1 August, the seasonal Waldrandpflicht ends. This is the leash requirement that applies in woodland-edge zones and the recreation zones of nature reserves in Canton Zurich during the spring/summer period.
In practice, this means: in certain designated recreation zones within nature reserves (like Thurauen), you can let your dog off the leash from 1 August onward.
What does NOT change on 1 August:
- General leash rules at public bathing areas are not affected by this date. Those are set by individual municipalities.
- At Katzensee and Türlersee, the leash requirement continues regardless of the 1 August date. These are nature reserves with their own permanent rules.
- For city bathing areas on Lake Zurich, the City of Zurich's own regulations apply, not the woodland-edge seasonal rule.
The short version: 1 August matters for Thurauen and similar recreation zones. It does not mean dogs are suddenly free to run everywhere.
