The good news: in March 2021, the City of Zurich lifted its blanket dog ban at the lakeshore. Instead of a general prohibition, specific daytime leash zones now apply in defined areas — dogs are no longer categorically excluded.
The practical caveats:
- Each Strandbad (lido) sets its own rules. Whether dogs are allowed, in which areas, and on which days varies by facility and season. Check the individual Strandbad's website before you go. Do not assume.
- Along the lakeshore outside the Strandbäder, daytime leash zones apply in certain sections. Read the signs on arrival.
- Rivers and lakes across the canton are governed by individual municipalities. When in doubt, keep your dog on-leash until you've read the local signage.

The Best Shaded Routes Around Zurich
No official shade ranking exists, but three routes have become summer favourites in the Zurich dog community:
Uetliberg forest path (Zurich) Dense tree cover for almost the entire stretch from the Triemli neighbourhood upwards. Before 9 am it's noticeably cooler here than in the city centre. T1 terrain, easy underfoot.
Lake Zurich shorepath, Küsnacht/Erlenbach section Wooded stretches alternate with lake access. Early mornings are quiet and shaded under the chestnut trees. Leash zones apply in some sections — watch for signs.
Pfäffikersee circular walk Flat, mostly shaded by reedbeds and riverside forest, and quieter than city-side options. Dogs can enter the water at several points legally — check local signage on arrival.
All three are T1-rated and suitable for dogs and owners without alpine experience. Even in the shade, avoid the midday heat window.
