Parks and Green Spaces — Where Dogs Can Run Free

Zurich has plenty of green space, but not everywhere allows your dog off-leash. The basic rule across Canton Zurich: dogs must be kept on a leash in publicly accessible buildings and in areas where this is signposted. Outside signposted zones, off-leash rules depend on what the individual municipality has designated — Hundegesetz §554.5 (the cantonal dog law, DE) grants municipalities authority to create and signpost dog zones.

In practice: always read the signs at park entrances. The City of Zurich clearly marks off-leash areas, leash-required zones, and dog-excluded areas — check the notice before letting your dog run free. For a full breakdown of leash laws in Canton Zurich, see our dedicated article.

Our curated picks (based on local experience):

  • Zürichhorn — broad lakeside lawns with plenty of room for larger dogs; leash rules apply near the waterfront itself
  • Käferberg / Hönggerberg — extensive forest and meadow paths on the city's edge, popular with dogs of all ages
  • Irchel Park — one of Zurich's largest city parks, with wide grass areas; check on-site signage within the park
  • Allmend Brunau — large open ground south of the city centre, combinable with a walk along the Sihl canal
Good to know: Zone designations and signage can change seasonally. For the most current information on off-leash areas in the City of Zurich, check the Hundekontrolle Stadt Zürich page (in German).

At the Lake — The Best Dog-Friendly Swimming Spots

Lake Zurich and the Greifensee are top summer destinations — for people and for dogs. But not every bathing beach allows dogs, especially during high season (June–August).

What you need to know:

  • Many cantonal and city bathing spots allow dogs outside official bathing hours or in separately signposted sections
  • Some lakeshore areas carry a dog ban in summer — these are marked on-site
  • For a relaxed swim day: early mornings or after 7pm tends to be much more open at most spots

Recommended spots (local editorial picks, no official certification):

  • East shore of Lake Zurich (Meilen, Stäfa, Rapperswil-Jona) — less urban pressure, more natural shoreline access points
  • Pfäffikersee — quieter alternative to the main lake, relaxed and dog-friendly atmosphere
  • Greifensee lakeshore — nature reserve with paths directly along the water; dogs welcome on the shore paths, but be mindful of wildlife
Note: Dogs of breeds on the Rassetypenliste II (restricted breeds list) that are walked by persons residing outside Canton Zurich are subject to a general leash and muzzle requirement throughout the canton — including at parks and lake shores. The restricted breeds list is explicitly non-exhaustive. See our guide on banned dog breeds in Canton Zurich or the official canton page (DE) for the current list.

Hiking with Your Dog from Zurich — 3 Easy Routes

For dogs who want more than a city stroll, the Zurich region offers excellent hiking destinations reachable directly from the city edge. All three routes below are recommendations based on local experience. For precise distances, durations, and difficulty ratings, we recommend SchweizMobil — Switzerland's official hiking portal. For a deeper guide with rules and tips, see our article on hiking with your dog in Zurich.

Route 1: Uetliberg Zurich's home mountain is a classic. The ridge trail between Uetliberg and Felsenegg (Planetenweg) offers panoramic views and well-maintained paths. Note that parts of the forest are nature protection zones — always follow signage on the ground. Reachable by S-Bahn from Zurich HB.

Route 2: Lägern (Baden–Dielsdorf) The Lägern ridge west of Zurich is broader than the Uetliberg, less visited, and very varied in landscape. Dogs have plenty of space along the ridge. Great for a half-day or full-day outing.

Route 3: Bachtel (Zurich Oberland) A gentle panoramic hill in the Zurich Oberland — ideal for dogs who are new to hiking. Wide alpine meadow paths, very few technical sections.

Good to know: The Sihlwald area (Wildnispark Zürich) has special dog access rules as a nature conservation project. Check the current rules directly at wildnispark.ch before visiting.

Dog-Friendly Cafés and Restaurants in Zurich

Zurich has a growing scene of dog-welcoming venues — terraces, neighbourhood restaurants, and cafés that are happy to see four-legged guests. Important caveat: venue policies change. Call ahead or check the restaurant's website before visiting, especially if you're planning to sit inside.

What generally works well:

  • Restaurants with large terraces are usually relaxed about dogs — outdoor tolerance is higher than indoors
  • Neighbourhood restaurants and country inns outside the centre tend to be more open than city-centre spots
  • Bring your own water bowl — many venues don't provide one

Tips by neighbourhood (local editorial picks):

  • Kreis 4/5 (Industrie / Langstrasse) — many relaxed cafés with outdoor seating, urban dog community
  • Kreis 7/8 (Hottingen, Riesbach) — residential neighbourhoods, plenty of terraces, dog-friendly crowd
  • Hürlimann Areal / Kreis 2 — neighbourhood meeting spots with large outdoor areas
Good to know: Dogs must be kept under control in restaurants at all times. The venue can refuse entry at any point — accept this without argument.

Practical Tips for Days Out with Your Dog in Zurich

Public Transport (ZVV) Dogs are permitted on the ZVV network. For current rules on tickets, leash requirements, and muzzle obligations, check the official ZVV page for dogs (DE) directly — rules can and do change.

What to bring

  • Water bottle and collapsible bowl — essential in summer
  • Enough poo bags (there are dispensers around the city, but not everywhere)
  • Basic first-aid kit for dogs on longer hikes

Seasonal tips

  • May–June: Ideal conditions — nature in full bloom, bathing season not yet at full intensity, less crowding at the lakes
  • July–August: Watch the heat — go out early or in the evening; hot asphalt can burn paw pads
  • Autumn: Beautiful in the forests, but mushroom-picking season means increased risk of toxic fungi in undergrowth

What's New in 2026?

The most significant change for Zurich dog owners doesn't involve parks or restaurants — it involves training requirements. Since 1 June 2025, a new legal framework applies in Canton Zurich. Anyone who acquired a dog after that date is required to complete a theory course and a practical course, with specific deadlines and requirements.

The theory course is required only for first-time owners and anyone who has not kept a dog for at least six consecutive months in the past ten years. The practical course is mandatory for new dog owners in Canton Zurich as a general rule. Exemptions apply in certain cases — including dogs over 10 years old at acquisition, transfers from a spouse or life partner (dog in shared household for at least 6 months), and licensed dog trainers.

That affects a lot of people now out enjoying their first summer with a new dog. If you're not sure which courses you need and by when, the quickest way to find out is our quiz.

Conclusion

Zurich offers real freedom for dogs and their owners — lakes, forests, city parks, and a dog-friendly food scene that keeps growing. Read the signs, respect the leash rules, and use your municipality as your go-to information source, and you'll get the best out of this city. And if you're in your first year with your dog: don't let the training obligations slip — they're part of the package.
