Parks and Open Spaces

These are the parks most consistently recommended for dogs in Zürich, either officially designated or widely recognised by the local dog-owner community:

  • Allmend Brunau — Zürich's most documented dog-friendly park, frequently described as a "HundeMecca" and named in multiple local guides as one of the best spots in the city. Large open meadows with room to roam.
  • Trinkwasserpark — Located at Fischerweg, 8064 Zürich. Listed as a fantastic dog-friendly area with open green space.
  • Irchelpark — A large park in the north of the city with meadows, wooded sections, and designated dog areas. Good for longer walks.
  • Bullingerpark — A neighbourhood park in Kreis 4, popular with local dog owners for daily outings.
  • Uetliberg — Zürich's local mountain also features in off-leash area guides. See the hiking section below for full details.

Lakeside and Scenic Walks

  • Lake Zürich Promenade — The lakeside path between Enge and Tiefenbrunnen is one of the most scenic daily walks in the city. Open green spaces alongside the water, accessible by tram from the centre.
  • Zürichberg and lake areas — The forested Zürichberg east of the centre, combined with the lake-facing slopes, gives you a mix of woodland and water views in a single outing.

Off-Leash Parks and Fenced Dog Areas

Options specifically for off-leash running are more limited than in some cities, but the best ones are well worth the trip:

  • Allmend Brunau / Parkplatz Allmend — The best-documented large off-leash area within Zürich city. Multiple community sources confirm it as the main dedicated off-leash destination in the city.
  • Wildnispark Zürich — Dogs are allowed throughout the park but must be kept on a leash, with one exception: there is a free-running zone between Sihluferweg and the Sihl river, open from 1 August to 31 March. Outside that season, leash rules apply park-wide.
  • Pfoten Park — Described as a "fully fenced paradise" for dogs, but note: it is located in Schlieren, not central Zürich. Worth the short trip for owners who want a fully enclosed space.

Useful Dog Rules in Zürich

A few rules that catch new dog owners off guard:

  • Forest leash rule (April–July): Dogs must be kept on a leash in Zürich forests and within 50 metres of forests from 1 April to 31 July. This applies canton-wide and is actively enforced.
  • Wildnispark: Leash required throughout the park, except the seasonal free-running zone noted above.
  • Public spaces: The canton's code of conduct asks owners to keep dogs on a short leash in restaurants and public buildings.
Important: The April–July forest leash rule affects Uetliberg, Zürichberg, and any wooded park. Plan your off-leash time at designated Hundewiesen during this period.

Hiking Around Zürich

Spring in Zürich is hiking season. Most trails around the city are dog-friendly, though leash rules apply in forested sections between April and July (see above).

Uetliberg: Zürich's local mountain is a great option with dogs. Leash rules apply on the summit area, but the forest trails below allow more freedom outside the April–July period. Directly accessible by S10 or the Uetlibergbahn. In spring, the forest is in bloom and the panorama over the city and Alps is outstanding.

Zürichberg: The large forest area east of the city centre. Well-signposted, quiet, and large enough to find space even on a sunny Saturday. Close to the zoo – avoid the zoo entrance, as dogs are not permitted inside.

Greifensee Circuit: About 15 km around the lake, mostly flat and dog-friendly. Reachable by S-Bahn towards Uster. Ideal for a full-day outing.

Albis Ridge: Slightly further (by car or train via Affoltern am Albis), but worth it for active dogs. Less visited than the Uetliberg, more space, more nature.

ZVV tip: Dogs are allowed on Zürich's public transport network. Small dogs in a carrier bag: free. Larger dogs need their own ticket (half-price rate). Always keep your dog on a leash. More info at zvv.ch.

Practical Tips for New Dog Owners in Zürich

Public transport (ZVV): Dogs are allowed on the ZVV network. Small dogs in a carrier: free. Larger dogs: own ticket at the half-price rate. Lead required at all times. More info at zvv.ch.

Leash rules: Outside designated off-leash areas, dogs must be on a leash in the city and on marked trails. In forests and within 50m of forests: leash mandatory from 1 April to 31 July. Signage is generally good – still worth checking each spot.

Poo bag stations: The City of Zürich has green poo bag dispensers at many locations throughout the city. A useful backup – but bring your own too.

Finding a vet: For the first check-up and vaccinations, look for a vet in your neighbourhood. Google Maps with "Tierarzt Zürich [district]" works well. Ask in your building or a local Facebook group for personal recommendations.

AMICUS reminder: Not registered yet? The deadline is 10 days after acquiring the dog (if over 3 months) or 10 days after a puppy turns 3 months old. More on registration.

What Makes Spring Especially Beautiful

Spring in Zürich means:

  • Wild garlic season in the Zürichberg forest (April/May) – the woodland paths smell incredible and are lush with green
  • Allmend Brunau at its best – the meadows open up after winter, ideal for long off-leash runs in the morning
  • Longer evenings – from April, after-work walks by the lake become genuinely enjoyable again
  • Lake sunsets – watching the sun go down over Lake Zürich with your dog is hard to beat
