Dog liability insurance is obligatory in Canton Zurich, with a minimum coverage of CHF 1,000,000. This applies as soon as you acquire a dog — there's no grace period. You must be able to provide proof of insurance at the time of municipal registration.
This insurance covers damage your dog causes to third parties:
- Property damage (e.g., your dog tears someone's jacket)
- Personal injury (e.g., your dog knocks someone over)
- Consequential costs in serious incidents
What it does NOT cover: Vet bills for your own dog — that's a separate animal health insurance policy, which is not mandatory in Canton Zurich.
You May Already Be Covered
Check your Privathaftpflichtversicherung (personal liability insurance) first. Many Swiss personal liability policies include or can be extended to cover dog-related damage. Look for terms like "Tierhalterhaftpflicht" or "Hund" in your policy documents.
If your personal liability policy already covers dogs with at least CHF 1M, you don't need a separate policy.
Two Options If You're Not Covered
Option 1 — Add dog coverage to your existing personal liability:
Many insurers allow you to extend your current policy to include dog liability. This is typically the most cost-effective route.
Option 2 — Standalone dog liability policy:
Available from all major Swiss insurers. For a neutral comparison, use comparis.ch — it doesn't sell its own products and lists options side by side.
We don't recommend specific insurers here. Compare on a neutral platform and ask your current provider first.

When Does Coverage Need to Be Active?
Immediately. There is no grace period after acquiring your dog. Insurance must be active from day one, and many municipalities require proof of insurance when you register your dog.
Municipal registration and AMICUS registration are due within 10 days of acquiring your dog. See our step-by-step guide to registering your dog in Zurich for the full process.
Other Obligations
Insurance is just one of several requirements. First-time owners (or those who haven't had a dog in more than 10 years) also need to complete mandatory dog courses. Take our quiz to see exactly what applies to your situation.
