Theory Course and Exam
Who needs it? First-time dog owners, and people who have not kept a dog for at least 6 consecutive months in the last 10 years.
What does it cost? The market shows a range of approximately CHF 100–160 for the theory course including the exam. As an example: animalcoach-zh.ch lists CHF 130 for the course with exam (as of April 2026).
- Online providers tend to be at the lower end of the range
- In-person providers are often slightly more expensive, but offer personal guidance
- The exam is included in most providers' prices – confirm before booking
The Veterinäramt of Canton Zurich maintains a list of approved theory course providers. Only book with approved providers – only their completions are recognized. More details: Dog Theory Course in Zurich.
Practical Course
Who needs it? All new dog owners who acquired a dog or moved into Canton Zurich on or after 1 June 2025 – with narrow exceptions.
What does it cost? Approximately CHF 50–100 per lesson, depending on the school, location, and format:
- Group training is generally cheaper than private lessons
- Schools in central Zurich tend to be more expensive than those in outer districts or rural areas
- For the minimum 6 lessons of 60 minutes: CHF 300–600
Important: 6 lessons is the minimum – not a guarantee of completion. If not all learning goals are achieved after 6 lessons, additional lessons are required. These cost extra. Budget accordingly.
Some schools offer packages combining theory and practical – this can be cheaper than booking separately. More details: Practical Dog Course in Zurich.
Municipality Registration and Dog Tax
Who needs it? All dog owners with a dog over 3 months – no exceptions.
Registration itself is free in most municipalities. What recurs annually is the Hundeabgabe (dog tax):
- General range in Canton Zurich: CHF 50–200 per year, depending on the municipality
- City of Zurich: approx. CHF 150/year
- Multiple dogs: some municipalities apply a higher rate for a second or third dog
This is a recurring annual cost – factor it into your long-term budget.

Liability Insurance
Who needs it? All dog owners – immediately after acquiring the dog.
- Legal minimum coverage: CHF 1,000,000
- Annual premium: approx. CHF 60–120, depending on the provider and dog
- Several Swiss insurers offer dog liability cover: Helvetia, Zurich Insurance, Allianz, and specialist pet insurers
- Some household or personal liability policies already include dogs – check your existing cover before taking out a new policy
Optional Costs (Not Mandatory)
Beyond the mandatory elements, there's a wide range of voluntary courses: agility, mantrailing, nose work, puppy play groups, and more. These are not legally required but can be very valuable – especially for puppies during the socialization window.
The distinction matters: mandatory courses have legally specified content and deadlines. Voluntary courses have neither. Both are worthwhile – but don't confuse them.
Frequently Asked Questions: Course Costs
Can I find a cheaper theory course? Yes – online providers tend to be cheaper. Quality varies, so only book with Veterinäramt-approved providers.
What if I can't afford the courses? The course obligation is a legal requirement. There is no exemption or waiver mechanism in cantonal law. For exceptional circumstances, contact your municipality.
Are course costs tax-deductible? Generally not as personal expenses under Swiss tax law. For a binding answer, consult a tax advisor – this is outside our scope.
Does pet insurance cover course costs? Liability insurance covers damage caused by the dog – not course fees. Standard pet insurance policies generally do not cover training costs.
