What Is the Dog Tax / Hundeabgabe?

The dog tax – officially called Hundeabgabe in Canton Zurich – is not a federal Swiss tax. It's a cantonal and municipal obligation. Every municipality in Canton Zurich collects it, but the exact amount varies depending on where you live.

The rule: every dog over 3 months old kept in a Zurich municipality must be registered with the local municipality. That registration automatically triggers the annual dog tax obligation – for every dog, every year.

Good to know: The dog tax applies regardless of breed or size – whether you have a Chihuahua or a Bernese Mountain Dog. Narrow exceptions exist only for specific assistance dogs, and these vary by municipality.

How Much Is the Dog Tax in Zurich?

There's no single canton-wide rate. The exact amount depends on your municipality. As a guide:

Municipality Annual amount (approx.) Note
City of Zurich approx. CHF 150 Check the current rate at stadt-zuerich.ch
Winterthur approx. CHF 100–130 Official rates at winterthur.ch
Other municipalities CHF 50–200 Varies widely – always verify on your municipality's website

Important: These figures are based on publicly available information as of April 2026 and may change. For the binding rate in your municipality, check your Gemeindeverwaltung's website or call them directly.

Some municipalities apply progressive rates if you have more than one dog. Ask specifically if you're keeping multiple dogs.

When Do You Pay the Dog Tax?

First time: When you register your dog with your municipality. This registration must happen within 10 days of acquiring the dog – or, for puppies, within 10 days of the dog turning 3 months old.

Ongoing: Most municipalities send an annual invoice at the start of the year (January to March). You'll receive a bill by post – pay it on time. Even if a bill doesn't arrive, it's your legal obligation to remain registered and pay.

If you move: Moving to a different municipality within the canton means re-registering your dog. The tax is typically calculated on a pro-rated basis for the remainder of the year.

How Do You Register and Pay?

Registration and the dog tax both go through your Gemeindeverwaltung (municipal administration). Here's how it works:

  1. Register your dog with the municipality – within 10 days of acquisition (or within 10 days of your puppy turning 3 months old)
  2. Bring or submit:
    • Your dog's AMICUS chip number (if the dog is already in the database)
    • Proof of liability insurance (minimum CHF 1,000,000 coverage)
    • Your personal ID
  3. The municipality issues the dog tax invoice – pay by bank transfer within the stated deadline
  4. AMICUS entry: The municipality registers the dog in AMICUS. First-time dog owners receive their AMICUS ID through this process.
Good to know: Many municipalities now offer online registration. Check whether yours does – it saves a trip to the office.

What Happens If You Don't Pay the Dog Tax?

The Hundeabgabe is a legal obligation. Not paying can result in:

  • Reminders with surcharges – The municipality sends payment reminders, usually with added fees.
  • Fines – Persistent non-payment can lead to formal fines.
  • De-registration – In extreme cases, the dog can be removed from the municipal register, with further legal consequences.

If you're in financial difficulty: contact your Gemeindeverwaltung proactively. Some municipalities have flexibility for exceptional circumstances.

Dog Tax and the New Course Requirements: The Connection

Since 1 June 2025, Canton Zurich's revised dog legislation applies to anyone who acquired a dog on or after 1 June 2025 or moved into the canton with a dog after that date.

Municipal registration is the central first step: when you register your dog, the municipality also records your AMICUS number and can track whether you've completed your course obligations.

Important: Course deadlines run from your acquisition date – not from the date you register. Delaying registration doesn't buy you more time for courses; it simply means you're also violating the 10-day registration deadline.

Simple rule: Acquire the dog → deadlines start immediately → tackle registration and courses as early as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions: Dog Tax Zurich

Do I pay separately for each dog? Yes – the Hundeabgabe is per dog. Two dogs means two payments (sometimes with a progressive rate for the second dog).

What if I'm only temporarily in Zurich? Dogs kept for fewer than 3 months in a Zurich municipality are generally exempt from registration and the tax. For longer stays, full registration applies. When in doubt, ask your municipality directly.

Are there exemptions or reductions? Some municipalities offer reductions – for example, for assistance dogs, shelter dogs, or seniors. Whether and how much depends on your municipality. Ask your Gemeindeverwaltung directly.

Is the dog tax the same across Switzerland? No – each canton and municipality sets its own rules. This article covers Canton Zurich only.

What do I need for registration? Your dog's AMICUS chip number (if already registered), proof of liability insurance (min. CHF 1M), and your personal ID.
